Defining Latin American art by Dorothy Chaplick

Defining Latin American

When I was a young artist just starting out ,one of my goals was to be in a art history book. Marcel Duchamp the famous artist was working on his piece The Large Glass and decided to leave the New York art scene in 1918 to play chess in Buenos Aires, after that he was no longer a practicing artist when he returned to Paris in 1923. Duchamp’s main interest was chess which he studied for the rest of his life to the exclusion of most other activities.  I thought if I ever became famous I would do the same and stop creating art but after 50 years of creating art ,I know that would be impossible for me. I can’t stop, I love the act of creating too much. You know being at the right place at the right time is how I was included in this book. I had set up a alter for the Day of the Dead at  the around Coyote Art Fair in Buck town. I had to go to Washington D.C. for the weekend of the show and these 2 young artists from Germany were in the space next to mine and I asked them to keep an eye on my piece. When I came back to tear down my exhibit , they said this woman had taken a few pictures of my altar and left her phone number because she was writing a book and could she include my piece in the book that she was writing. I called and said I would be honored. And a few  years later the  publisher sent me a copy of the book and thanked me for my contribution.

The book was published in 2005 and you can get a copy on Amazon.
